Unfolding Shadows

Work in progress.

Since September 2024, I have been documenting the renovation of underground theatre at Bozar Museum, Brussels, made by the architect Victor Horta. This project stands at the intersection of documentary photography and a broader exploration of spatial perception and processes of projection. Horta’s vision at the Palais des Beaux-Arts transcended function and levels, establishing symbolic links between spaces; notably between the ground-floor Hall and the underground Salle M, where architectural elements echo each other. The process of projection—both literal and figurative—becomes central, as the transformation of these spaces invites new narratives and interpretations, allowing for an evolving interplay between perception and scenographic possibility. Inspired by thinkers like Gaston Bachelard, Michel Foucault, and Henri Lefebvre, this project explores theatre spaces as liminal zones—palimpsests where past and future coexist. By revealing their material and symbolic shifts, I examine how construction sites serve as dynamic landscapes of memory and imagination. This work deconstructs architectural layers, revealing the interplay of past and present, transforming spaces and perceptions in constant flux.
